Learning at home:

Mapping out a plan that takes developmental science and emotional health into consideration

For those looking for ideas and insights into how to facilitate a more natural process of learning at home, whether you are trying to do “school” from home, trying to avoid school altogether, or you find yourself somewhere in between.

In this course, I bring developmental science and twenty years of experience in the field to bring you practical insights and ideas you can try at home.

A facilitated offering of this course is being offered by my intern, Rebecca Wall, and will run from April 23rd to May 28th, 4 - 5pm PDT.

Please contact us if you’d like more information about this.

Course Outline

Session 1: Taking stock

What works and what doesn’t - take inventory of all the things that are working already, as well as what isn’t working for your child and your family as a whole

Take on a facilitative role in your child’s learning - know when to take the lead and when to step back, and how to preserve our role as parent in the process

Session 4: Release & Expression

Emotional release - when emotional energy builds up and needs somewhere to go, we can build in times & creative ways to release it, leading to better receptivity to learning

Expression that comes from the inside out - create spaces for your child’s opinions, thoughts, talents and unique contributions in an information-rich world

Session 2: Rest & Relationship

Exploring the role of rest and the conditions that lead to receptiveness - how we can bring down the alarm and keep from overwhelm (both internally and externally)

Relationship - why relationship is important & how we can foster the kinds of relationships our child needs, with a special focus on the benefits of reading together

Session 5: Mentorship & Matchmaking

Mentorship - draw on others (grandparents, older siblings, extended family, community members) who can be part of the supportive learning team

Matchmaking - intentionally make connections with mentors, resources and community opportunities to enrich your child’s learning and build your village

Session 3: Exploration & the Natural World

The natural world - how we can tap into the magic of nature through facilitating deeper connection with the elements and the animals, with a special focus on wonder

Exploration mode - how shifting from a focus on outcome and right answers to allowing our children to explore the world around them, will lead to lasting learning

Session 6: Bringing it all together

A fluid plan - put all the pieces together and find the rhythm and routines that work for your child and your family, while being flexible in the process

Trust and tears - muster the courage to trust in the natural process of learning, making room for disappointments along the way as well as differing opinions of onlookers

Personal Consultations

If you would like a more personalized exploration of how these concepts might apply in your unique situation, Tamara is available for one-on-one consults.

Sometimes all you need is one session to give you a clearer picture of the path ahead or to affirm your intuition (and satisfy the questions of those around you!). And sometimes you may want someone to walk with you on your journey until the ground feels more solid beneath you.

Check-in for availability. Individual consults are $120/hour session.

If you are part of a home education group, or would like to bring others in your village (partner, grandparent, mentor, etc) together for a consult, this can also be arranged.
